INTRODUCTION

Construction has come a long way from the days of basic scaffolding. One thing that has significantly impacted the industry is strut channel. Here is a bit of its history, various types, advantages, and applications it brings to modern construction.

Strut channel, also known as channel strut, unistrut, channel, and simply just “strut” provides a strong and safe framework for building. It is weldless and therefore, adjustable. It is superior to scaffolding because it is sturdier and does not sway. Strut was originally used for structural support for wiring, mechanical, and plumbing components for the electrical and HVAC industries. All in all, since strut arrived on the scene in 1924, the list for its uses has grown exponentially.

WHAT IS CHANNEL STRUT

Many types of strut channel are available. Most any setup of channel can support at least 40 lbs. However, with the right channel and setup, a framework can support upwards to 3300 lbs. Most strut channel is constructed of either Grade S315MC or Grade S275 steel. One can also find it in stainless steel made from Grade 316L.

Struts are long, square tubes used with various accessories to construct framework. Strut is also used to brace temporary walls during construction. Using it is preferred today for many reasons. It is easy to set up and offers much versatility. It is cost effective because it can be broken down and reused. Also, provided you choose the right strut, it can stand up to harsh weather conditions.

Here is a Unistrut video that Disney made back in the 1950s. The basic concepts of it are still relevant today.

The most popular channel used is 1-5/8 x 1-5/8 and made from 12 gauge low carbon steel. Brands known for their quality strut channels include G-Strut, Unistrut, C-Strut, Hilti, and Flex-Strut. Standard length tends to be 10 or 20 feet with standard thickness 1-58 x 1-5/8. Go here for a Unistrut size chart.

Strut channel’s claim to fame is that it does not require welding or drilling. As mentioned before, it is also adjustable and reusable. Complementing these channels are various essential components, including fittings, fasteners, hangers, pipe clamps, and accessories. Furthermore, mounting and hanging brackets enable secure attachment of the strut channel to metal surfaces such as ceilings.

OTHER PROJECTS UTILIZING STRUT CHANNEL

    • Entertainment Industry: for stage setups, lighting rigs, and special events for concerts, theater, sports, etc…
    • Urban Gardening and Agriculture: strut channel is used to construct sturdy and customizable frameworks for supporting vertical gardens, hydroponic systems and rooftop farms.
    • DIY Home Projects: unique furniture, storage solutions, etc…
    • DIY Fitness Equipment: pull-up bars, squat racks, suspension training systems, etc…
    • Retail Displays and Exhibits: temporary and permanent retail displays, trade show exhibits, and pop-up shops.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, strut channel emerges as a versatile, cost-effective, and durable solution revolutionizing construction support systems. Its rich history, varied applications, and constant innovations position it as a cornerstone in modern construction projects.
